Matrix Biology

Research in the Department of Nephrolgy forms the Matrix Biology Research Theme of IMEM and is focussed on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying progressive renal injury.

The specific and established areas of interest are the synthesis and accumulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the interaction of renal cells with selected coponents of the ECM (eg hyaluronan); regulation of pro-fibrotic growth factor synthesis and signalling and the regulation of cell phenotype, particularly epithelial and fibroblast differentiation.
